This week we take a look at what makes a good first car for a teen driver. Is it something new and modern? Or should they get the old family hand-me-down?

You know what’s funny? The car shown is the exact car my teen is getting when she gets her drivers license nex t spring. She is still getting used to driving a manual transmission but really likes driving the Mazda 3, more than our Outback.

My standards for a teen car are: Lots of airbags, ABS, not too much power. The Mazda fills those requirements nicely and if it gets into an accident I’m not out too much money.

used. period. silly argument. Any car after 2009 has better side safety. So the teen gets a 5 year old car. It, by 2015, has airbags and abs. That’s ABS and not cut abs. It’s depreciated and reliable.

Done. In just two years the bumpers will be shitty and the seats stained with gigantor mocha latte frappuwappu coffee milkshake drinks and, just, shit everywhere. They don’t need features that the working and commuting parents of today can’t afford. They need to drive safely. Nanny features of lane warnings and the such just makes for a lazy driver who doesnt have to look for anything.

The best collision mitigation system is a careful and attentive driver.

Absolutely spot on. I haven’t heard of cut abs, otherwise I might argue that cars as far back as 2005 are just fine for a first car.

I get nervous when I think of a teen and those newer assisted features because they are far from fool proof and an inexperienced driver is likely to be caught short when the computer says “I’m confused, you take over” all of a sudden..

as in the abdominal muscles....I have to capitalize ABS to differentiate. Such a pain to use the shift key and care about spelling, grammar, etc sometimes.

Agreed. I’m looking for a car for a 14 year old right now, my number one requirement is that it has to be a manual. If she wants to drive it for a year and get something else that’s fine, but she’s gotta learn on a stick.

My sister learned on a stick. She won a boat in a drawing and sold it to buy a stick Honda. She drove that thing for twenty years. She still drives a stick like crap. She tries. But you can tell when someone has no actual sympathy for anything be it mechanicals or petting ani mals. It’s just technical understanding and terrible application. I hope htings work well for you and her.

ABS and air bags are my two requirements. I can’t tell you how many times ABS has saved my ass.

Indeed. The only issue i have with ABS is the psychological slow icy stop where its working but your still sliding down hill into the intersection... and you just press harder...because fighting the pump is really gonna make it work better....

I’m guessing my daughter will be like that, all she cares about is looking cute and fucking around on her phone. Even so, she’s going to have to learn to drive a stick shift, change a tire, and basic (check air in tires, etc.) maintenance before she leave my house.

I will take it a step further.  Not only am I not buying my daughters a new car, I am not buying them a car.  I will offer the same deal to them, that my parents offered to my sister (we all learned some lessons with my first car).  I will match whatever my daughters can save, and then we’ll take that budget and go find something simple and safe.  It will be their car, that they bought, and they can take as good or as bad care as they will.  If they ruin it or wreck it, they’re on their own.

A teenage driver’s first car should have a manual transmission. If you learn to drive in a car with an automatic transmission you will probably never learn how to drive a car with a manual transmission. If you learn how to drive a car with a manual, you can figure out how to drive a car with an automatic transmission is five minutes.

I understand, I’ve done a lot of sliding myself but you just have to trust the technology. It works.

My first and current car is a used 1999 Pontiac Firebird TransAm (automatic unfortunately because my dad wanted me to wait until I was a bit older to drive a manual ) . Is it a bit excessive for a teenager? Absolutely, but I take care of it and don’t hoon around in it(mostly because it’s old and it might break down). My parents even got the engine rebuilt this January. Yeah it doesn’t have anything fancy like parking sensors or blind spot assists but I feel like it makes me more alert while driving. However at times I do wish I had assists because driving such a big car I feel like I might end up damaging it.

The first car I regularly drove was a 1966 model. I lived, and this was in the 90s. And when I bought a car to be put under my name, it was even older.

New cars for kids = spoiled little shits.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Lol tell that to my aunt. She only drives a manual and when she drove an automatic she hit a pole because she didn’t know it was in reverse . So she just sticks with her manual Camaro.

Worst idea

My boss: I’m going to lease a car when ___ gets her license .

Me; hasn’t she already bumped into two  things? Returning a lease with damage can come with huge fees.

Boss: oh I do loads of business with them. They’ll eat the loss. (He’s bought 3 cars over 10 years)
